The winter snows generally arrive in Karelia in November. Cross-country skiing is then possible everywhere and continues all the way through to March, while downhill skiing in the Koli hillsides even goes on into April.
A skiing expedition in the winter forest is an unforgettable experience. You can also get around in the snowy forests on snow shoes, by snow mobile or in a sledge pulled by a dog team. There are many kilometers of marked routes for snow mobiles in such places as Lieksa, Ilomantsi and Central Karelia. You can also go fishing in winter, and fishing through a hole cut in the ice of a lake is a very popular sport, especially in early spring.
Equestrian sports are also available throughout the year. Riding on an Icelandic horse is a wonderful way to enjoy the warmth of the spring sunshine.
